Year 4 Blog

25th October 2024

In the last week of this half term, Year 4 have finished up their project learning on understanding what legacy the Romans left us and why the Romans left Britain. We have recapped on all of our learning and discussed the influence the Romans have had on our lives.

In Maths, we have been looking at area, making our own shapes and then measuring them by either counting squares or using our times tables! (times tables are very important and can be used in other areas of Maths!)

In English, we have finished off our newspaper unit and produced an edited, published piece of work about the Battle of Watling Street where Boudica lost to the Romans.

In Art, we created our own Roman mosaics!

We finished the term with a Year 4 dodgeball tournament (which York Class won!).

In RE, we looked at the importance of Rangoli Patterns, what they symbolise and then created our own.

18th October 2024

We have been very busy down in Year 4 this week! We started our last English unit of this half term, began finishing off the addition and subtraction unit in maths, and enjoyed some art.

In maths, we have been subtracting two 4-digit numbers, with and without an exchange. We have enjoyed using a mixture of pictorial and abstract resources to aid our understanding. This half term we have worked really hard with our addition and subtraction, and we are looking forward to starting the area unit next week!

In English, we started off by exploring newspaper reports, looking at good examples and identifying their features. We then spent a couple of days practising different sentence structures, ready for when we write in the style of a journalist. Over the last couple of weeks, we are going to be writing a newspaper report of the Battle of Watling Street, where Boudica and the Romans meant on the battlefield for the final time.

In project this week, we have mostly been enjoying art. We have been planning and creating our own version of a Roman mosaic, using the beautiful mosaics in Fishbourne Roman Palace for inspiration. It has been lovely to have some time to be creative and have a go at working with different materials and mediums.

Year 4 have worked incredibly hard this half term!

11th October 2024

This week started with a visit from a gold medal winning gymnast Kelly Simm who put the whole school through their paces with some intense exercises.

Towards the end of the week, we continued our study of Roman Britain with the help of another learning box from the Novium Museum. Our focus this time the Roman army as we met a centurion who told us what his life was like at the time. We also got to try our hand at learning some of their battle formations so we are better prepared should any of the upper juniors try to invade.

The box also contained some incredible replicas of a Roman shield, helmet, body armour and sandals, as modelled by the lovely Lola, below.

We finished with a little bit of archery to help us remember the Roman numerals we learnt recently.

We also did some maths, Guided reading and R.E. which were all equally as lovely.

4th October 2024

This week in Year 4 we have deepened our Roman understanding and learnt about the Roman influence on Chichester and the differences between a Roman child and a modern day child.

In Maths, Year 4 have finished their unit on place value by tackling rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.

In English, we have been planning and beginning to write our recounts of the trip to Fishbourne Roman Palace. We have also learnt about fronted adverbials and will try to include these in our recounts. We are looking forward to publishing these to fill out Year 4 display board!

In our project lessons, we have focused on the lives of Roman children to modern day children. For example, did you know that in Roman times lots of children died due to poor health and children enjoyed playing games with animal bones!

In Religious Education, we have continued our study into Hinduism and learnt about the concept of Samsara, helping children understand the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth.

In gymnastics, we have learnt how to do a handstand and a cartwheel. In basketball, we practised the skill of defending by shielding the ball with our body.

27th September 2024

This week in Year 4, we are continuing our exploration of the Romans! We have been learning about how Roman children used to live their lives, the influence that Romans had on our society, and even baked Roman flatbreads!

In Maths this week, Year 4 have been working on ordering and comparing numbers up to 10,000, as well as making learning and practicing Roman Numerals. We enjoyed using lolly-pop sticks to practice forming different Roman Numerals.

In English, we have been working on our recount of our trip to Fishbourne Roman Palace by sequencing images of our day and exploring good examples of recounts. Next week we will be putting all of our hard work into practice when we write our recounts.

In PE, we have been really enjoying doing basketball and gymnastics. We have been learning how to safely jump and land and how to perform a landing on vaults. In basketball, we have been gradually adding in new skills, such as dribbling with the ball and working with our teammates to successfully score points.

The whole of Year 4 went on a train journey to Fishbourne Roman Palace.

In our first activity we had a Roman workshop were we cooked in a Roman kitchen, weaved wool, created mosaics, wrote on wax tablets and dressed in Roman clothes.

Then we watched a video about the discovery of the Roman Villa in Fishbourne.

Next, we walked through the gardens, that were the size of a football pitch, and looked at all the plants and trees that were set out the same way it was 2,000 years ago.

After our lunch, we walked about the museum and found out some fascinating information about how the Romans kept clean in the baths.

Then we look at the wonderful Roman mosaic floors in the Palace.

What an exciting day we had!
