Science

Science is as part of our Year group projects at Nyewood CE Junior school.  In science lessons we offer opportunities for the children to:

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of important scientific ideas, processes and skills, relating these to the world around them;
  • Learn about ways of thinking, questioning and communicating ideas;
  • Explore the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

There are opportunities in each unit of work for children to develop the processes and skills of investigative and enquiry based science.  Each unit also offers children opportunities to develop their use of scientific language and vocabulary – both language development and children’s understanding of scientific concepts are reinforced and clarified by:

  • Speculating, discussing questions, explaining and comparing;
  • Listening and reading;
  • Predicting and sequencing ideas;
  • Evaluating and suggesting alternatives.

Many lessons provide opportunities for children to develop mathematical skills through collecting, presenting and analysing data. There are also opportunities for children to link science with other areas of the curriculum, e.g. music, geography, history, DT, art, PE and PSHE.

The use of ICT enhances and supports children’s learning in science, and some skills will be transferred into ICT lessons or in science lessons with teachers making use of the iPads and ICT suite.  Children are encouraged to find out more about their science topics at home. They could collect information and data relevant to the specific unit they are being taught, and they could also think about methods to test some of their ideas.
