We have twelve classes in the school. There are 3 classes of Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 children. All classes are mixed ability and have a maximum number of 30 children. For maths, children in years 4,5 and 6 are taught in ability groups as we have found that our children progress faster through using this format. In year 3, children will be taught maths as a class to support their transition to Junior school.
Children are supported within their class by their class teacher as well as a Teaching Assistant, who are present in every class each morning to support children with Maths and English. Children with more specific needs e.g. English as an Additional Language (EAL) will be supported through more focussed group work during the day.
In line with Government guidelines, all teachers receive 10% non-contact time in order to carry out Planning, Preparation and Assessment of pupil progress (PPA Time). In order to maintain continuity for children, PPA time at Nyewood is currently carried out by established staff at the school by Teachers and Higher Level Teaching Assistants.
Towards the end of each academic year, parents and children will be informed of their new teacher for the subsequent year, and will spend at least one whole day in their new classes before the Summer break. Children in Year 6 and Year 2 will experience a more comprehensive transition programme to help them acclimatise in their new school.
