Reading in Lockdown 3

During the lockdown and school closure of March-July 2020, we offered books for borrowing from school for those who were learning at home. However, the uptake for this was low, and we have not received all of the books back. As well as this, the weather was much nicer then, meaning that when Mrs Benbow and Mrs Lipscombe were stood outside offering books, they were not freezing or soaked, as they would be now! Therefore, for the time being, we are not going to offer books from school for those learning at home. We will reassess this stance if schools remain closed after half term. I know this is frustrating, but we have a few solutions to this.

West Sussex Library Service

Following this link, you are able to sign up for a library card online. This is FREE. Children can borrow up to 20 titles at a time!

https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/libraries/using-library-services/library-cards/

Once you are a member of the library, you are able to borrow books using a contactless collection and drop off service. See here for more information:

Audible free trial

You are able to sign up for a free trial of Audible, an audio book platform through ww.amazon.co.uk

The free trial lasts for 1 month, and you can ‘buy’ one book with the free credit. You can return this book for a new one sometimes too. This trial is FREE, however, you must remember to cancel the trial at the end of the trial period, if you do not want to stay subscribed. Subscription is £7.99 per month and you need an Amazon account to access Audible.

Oxford Owl

Sign up for free to access lots of e-books. You can search by age range, and some of these are on Accelerated Reader!

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/user/sign_up.html

Accelerated Reader

Please bear in mind that we use Accelerated Reader to guide the children as to which ‘level’ books they should access (we call this their ‘ZPD’ and is a range of numbers, for example your child may have a ZPD of 4.2 – 5.6). We do not use Oxford Owl, Oxford Reading Tree or Read, Write Inc to ‘level’ our children, so although they can freely read these books, the levels there will not correspond to your child’s ZPD level from AR. You can check the ZPD of the e-books, if they are on the AR system, at https://www.arbookfind.co.uk/

Children can read any of the above books, even if they are not on the AR system, and even if they are outside of their usual ZPD. We would prefer children to be reading (anything!) than not at all! Of course, they may quiz on any books which are on the AR system, as usual.
