At Nyewood Junior School, we recognise that physical activity has numerous benefits for children and young people’s physical and mental health and that access to sufficient daily activity can have wider benefits for all, improving behaviour and enhancing academic achievement.
We use the Succeed in P:E as the basis of our P:E teaching alongside lessons as part of our Year group projects.
Our children recieve two hours of quality P:E every week both in our school hall and outside on the playground and field.
Swimming is a national curriculum requirement, with all pupils expected to be able to swim confidently, and know how to be safe in and around water by the time that they leave us in year 6. This is one lesson that could literally save a child’s life and all children receive swimming lessons during years 4 or 5 as well as 'Top up' sessions in Year 6.
Whilst, as a school, we have traditionally been very successful in competitive sport, this is only part of the picture. Through membership of our local (FAB) School Sports Partnership, we are able to maximise inclusive opportunities. In addition, we enter multiple teams into events whenever possible, such as Area Athletics and a number of our Sports Leaders will attend off-site training to bring new ideas and opportunities to our playgrounds. This is in addition to league events featuring our football and netball teams and a range of sports competitions from dodgeball to badminton and swimming to basketball. We value each contribution and every event, regardless of the result, is celebrated in our weekly celebration assemblies.
